Never heard of a fellow named John McPhee, have you?

graydon , what does he know - he's on the other side of the pond :)

I love John McPhee - of the geo's my fave is Rising From the Plain.

Bob - you should read him! He's amazing!

Indeed, I had never heard of him but now I'll keep an eye open for his
schist lit.

Aside from all that schist, there are other topics he covers gnissly - The geo series was originally published in small segments in the New Yorker .. but other notable titles are "Coming into the Country" about Alaska in the 70's (well, notable in that I'm particularly fond of them) and "The Control of Nature" I don't think there is a finer non-fiction writer around. (pardon my gushing) Galen Rowell's 'coffee table" book of photography on Alaska has excerpts from McPhee's essays on it.
