So, what is the present consensus on the subject of the high-ISO performance of K-x (besides the decrease in the number of pixels): is it mostly due to processing and hence is applicable only to JPEG, or RAW images also show considerable improvement over K-7?
Both. The main edge of the K-x is that higher ISO settings don't raise contrast (as it usually happens), hence underexposed areas are not so underexposed and the noise doesn't show up so much. I believe the K-x to be the best improvement in image quality seen so far in Pentax cameras and I'm sure many folks buying it as spare body will use it as their workhorse for available light photography. I truly wish Pentax would be smart enough to bring out a K-7n using that sensor/processor combo!
