It's not that hard nowadays, if you're prepared to dig deep into your wallet.
I believe Paul Stenquist has the Pentax 12-24, and speaks well of it.  It's
only f4, which is probably the biggest strike against it.

The DA* 16-50 isn't quite as wide, but it is a stop faster.  I have one of
these as my primary lens, and am more than satisfied with it.  It's quite
good fairly close up, too - in fact it's easier to fill the frame with a
subject using the 16-50 than it is with the 50-135, because quite often
the minimum focussing distance of the 50-135 can be the limiting factor.

For non-Pentax glass the Sigma 10-20 seems to gather favourable press.

Apart from the zooms there's also the DA 14mm, another f/2.8 contender.

I wouldn't use a fish-eye as an everyday lens, especially for faces.
