I don't think that they really think that photography is over, they
aren't sure if it's really art.  IMO, the fact that they are taking
the time to ask the question means that they are concerned about the
status of photography in their world.

Photography is many things to many people, and most of the time it
isn't art, no matter what we as photographers try to make ourselves
believe, and try to convince others.  I consider it like architecture.
 Most of it is functional, some is pleasing, and very few examples are
what you'd call art, but when a photograph becomes art, it transcends
the medium and becomes something beyond the original purpose.

Look at Vermeer's work.  His paintings are in galleries, and he is one
of the masters, but he didn't set out to create masterpieces for us,
he was painting portraits on commission for paying clients.  Perhaps
one day photography will have a legitimate place in the art world that
is widely recognized, it is way to early to say either way.
