I have used a PKA adapter with my tamron SP 180/2.5 
with no problems on an istDS.

the pentax a300/ F4 costs almost as much as that one for
an 300/F2.8.

Generic quality is excellent.  There are (at least) three versions.  I 
paid £400 about seven years ago.  Should come with leather case, 
filters, caps and hood, which mine did not.  The PKA adaptor is reputed 
to be flakey.
