A bedsit is a 'bedroom / sitting room'.

Think of a small studio flat, bedroom and kitchen all as part of the main
room. Now think of it with old and slightly tired furniture, all gone
slightly mouldy.

It used to be a common practice in England that a landlord would split up
a house into seperate rooms, give each room a cooking facility and rent
them out to single people.
