It powers off by itself at a certain point. If you switch it back on soon enough it will go right over to the other battery, if you give it too much time, especially when it is warm outside you may find that the empty battery has regenerated enough to trick the camera into thinking it still has a few exposures left in it. First check on power on is thus whether a good battery is present in the location specified as first choice.
