A "fairly large 7.4" is like a "somewhat disappointing punch in the face".

I'm glad you're alright, and hope the aftershocks are "relatively minor" from here on out.

Glad to hear you're OK. 7.4 is pretty major - will probably make our news tonight. Hope the water a power is back on for you soon.

Hi all,

Not sure if we'll make worldwide news but we've had a 7.4 earthquake
here. It struck during the night and was pretty effective at waking
me up. It was close and shallow, 30km away and 33km deep.

We're OK, only minor damage. A couple of bits of broken glassware
inside, and we lost the top of one of our chimneys which broke a few
tiles on its way down.

Most of the city has lost power and a water main burst here so there's
no water either. I expect that'll be sorted out before too long. I'm
sending this from one of our laptops (with the good battery) and a
cellular USB modem. Handy things to have. But I might not be
checking my email often for a few days.

We're getting small aftershocks every couple of minutes (some less
small than others!). I'm still shaking a bit myself!

Cheers,
Dave
