Expanding on this a little, Lightroom is implemented on top of an
SQLlite database, that's what the .LRCAT file is. Lr has the
limitation in that the application cannot access the .LRCAT file on a
network-mounted volume: that must be on a locally connected volume.

The image files referenced in the catalog at can be on any mounted
volume, local or network, on-line or off-line. (When the files are on
a volume which is off-line, Slide Show, Develop, Print and Web module
operations are restricted.)
