depends on the model -- i've used both; the 23" Cinema Display HD (with clear plastic housing) uses ADC and needs the adapter; the 23" Cinema Display (aluminum housing) which i'm using right now uses DVI; new macs use MiniDisplayport, but an adapter to DVI costs $10 from monoprice.com
