I wouldn't give up all hope yet.

I've used a ball head (the earlier version of the spring-loaded one)
with a 300/2.8, and even with the 250-600.

It isn't sturdy enough to hold the lens absolutely rigid, but for
use on a monopod when you need a little flexibility its's ok -
there are other sources of lens movement besides the mount itself.

That said, though, I prefer to use the monopod directly screwed
into the lens whenever possible; there's no point in introducing
any vibration that you don't need, and a direct connection is
far more rigid.
