I do use my laptop as my desktop as well - and on my desk sits four external hard drives in plug-play USB drive bays; they essentially act like massive 2TB flash disks for backing up my work, storage, etc. In addition, I use a second monitor (21 inch 4:3 ratio) in a vertical stack setup - with my laptop acting as my primary monitor below the large external. I do my editing in LR this way - using the two monitor setup (one runs thumbnails of the gallery I'm working in - the external displays my full image and I do my processing up top). Two monitors are now a must-have for me; I love the real estate provided.
