That's certainly a viable solution, and a number of photographers and art directors that I know work much the same way. I prefer having my laptop unencumbered, because I use it away from my desk quite often. I'm a full time writer and photographer, but I spend more time writing than processing photos or shooting. In the summer, I frequently write outdoors, and even in the winter, I like to get away from the office and write in the living room. My desktop setup is similar to yours: ten USB drives, and two monitors. Only one monitor is used for critical rendering, the other displays the PhotoShop windows. When I have a tough writing assignment that requires numerous sources, I work on the desktop so that I can display a number of documents at once.
