To add to what Ann said, most good art stores and some photo stores now have 
precut matts in sizes that are more accommodating for modern film and sensor 
sizes. For example, 12 x 18 and 8 x 12 precut matts are widely available in a 
range of styles and colors. I've also seen 17 x 12, 11 x 15, 12 x 12 and 8 x 8.
