According to the Pulitzer Prize photo exhibit I saw, which included
this photo, journalists were *prohibited* from coming in contact with
the local people. (Whether this was to protect the journalists from
disease or protect the locals - people traveling from around the world
could certainly be bringing in new bugs - I don't know). It indicated
he did chase off the vulture and went to get help. But he was deluged
with abuse from people who didn't know all this backstory.

Makes it even sadder, really.
