It sounds like you attended a seminar run by shady people. Doesn't mean that you can't use Facebook as a legitimate and useful marketing tool.
Local affiliate of PPA. Their choice of presenters at this workshop was, perhaps, unfortunate, but I don't think the organization itself is shady.
None the less, it left a bad impression - that a certain disdain for the boundaries of ethical conduct are inherent in Facebook marketing; manipulating and using people to line your own pockets. I wouldn't do that to strangers, and certainly not to a "friend".
It's not a useful marketing tool if I have to act in a manner I find unethical and repugnant in order to use it.
Prior to that experience, I was neutral toward facebook, simply disinterested in it. I have my own ways to waste time on the internet.
