Looks like it is the USB port... computer doesnt seem to know it is there.
It should be drive F but when I plug either the card reader or my canon
P & S into it , the drive doesn't even come up...
The only drives that come up are C, D , E - E is the big old external
drive...
when things are working with the Vivitar plugged in, Adobe downloader
recognizes F,G,G,H...etc
After I went away and came back and rebooted and plugged in the creader
with a good CF card in it, I got that little chime sound that you get
when things are working... however, when I launched the downloader
the stuff at that port didn't show up on the list of choices.
Same thing when I just tried to use it for downloading directly from my
point and shoot... that didnt work either.
conclusion - it isn't the card reader thats mucked up ...
The pins look fine and it didnt take much effort to slip a card in..
The 2.0 does appear to be cooked, however - but that isn't a biggy at
all - the files that really matter that were one it are on the computer.
Also - the ACDsee device detector did detect the card reader...
Further, I tried my old 80 GB external drive there and nothing happened.
IDeas??? Anyone??

Is the 'E' drive also a USB drive?
If so, have you tried disconnecting it and testing the card reader in
that USB port?
If that works, your least cost solution might be an external multi-port
USB hub. You could plug the 'E' drive and the card reader into it and
plug the hub into your existing, working USB port.
I would look for one that includes an external power adapter.
A problem I've frequently seen with USB is the computer doesn't have the
power to supply all the USB devices that want to be attached to it,
which is less of a problem with powered hubs.
Four port hubs are available for under $10, and you should be able to
find a powered 4 port hub for under $20.
