I built a free standing wooden C shaped box(the fourth wall is the basement wall), roofed with triple ply black plastic sheeting. I attached it to the house only by screwing to the timbers supporting the house floor above my head, just to give support. I made the whole thing light proof with 2 rolls of duct tape. It actually looks and works really great. I shall have to take some pictures of it to post.
