I believe you, Steve. In the mid-seventies a friend and I were bored one Sunday 
afternoon so we decided to hitch-hike to Niagara Falls and spend a few hours on 
the American side just for the hell of it.

The border guard was incredulous, could not understand why we'd want to just 
spend a couple of hours in Niagara Falls, New York because we were bored. We 
were wearing t-shirts, cut off jeans and had about $5 in our pockets. We did 
have ID (drivers licences) but we were walking across, so I'm sure we raised 
lots of red flags.

But they let us across.

And we got back.

And hitch-hiked home safe and sound.

Such foolish kids we were.  :-)

So I believe your story. But things aren't what they were back then.

perhaps that's true now, but in my 1981 case, i was admitted to Canada from the 
US with no proof of permanent address
