I won't try to defend this price increase, as i don't know Pentax' cost structure, but I would wager that their new Ricoh masters took a look at their costs and P/L before deciding to make this move. If you look at Ricoh's existing product prices you see that they price for a niche market, and Pentax has been drifting in that direction for years.
