Charles, this is off-topic for the thread (like that never happens!), but I think there's a good chance that your flash-toting pros are going manual on the flash and camera and spot-metering for exposure. That club situation is a real toughy for anybody's flash to get right or consistent in full auto. I believe the distances are too great for the pTTL/iTTL logic to function reliably.
I've rarely used flash from off-stage like that but if I did I'd bring my meter and take 3 degree spot readings. You should be able to use the manual spot reading in your K-7 similarly.
