Most of the time the correct comparison to make is between
the stability of *no tripod at all* and that of a tripod with the
center column extended.

Agreed

Yes, keeping the center column retracted is a
better option,

Agreed

but if it's not possible or practical it shouldn't be
dismissed so lightly.

Then you bought the wrong size tripod.

Interesting that in the video they show the least stable use of the tripod - with the center column extended.

That's really the only way the 390 series can be used comfortably, unless the user is quite short. With the centre column down, the max height is just over 4 feet. It was the one thing that made me hesitate about buying it, but it will do for occasional use while bushwalking or travelling.

People seem to be forever comparing the stability of a tripod without
the center column extended to that of a tripod with the center column
extended. Most of the time the correct comparison to make is between
the stability of *no tripod at all* and that of a tripod with the
center column extended. Yes, keeping the center column retracted is a
better option, but if it's not possible or practical it shouldn't be
dismissed so lightly.
