It didn't even occur to me that he was doing anything but thinking about a 
photograph that he had just looked at.  

The problem with the photo is that it isn't immediately obvious that the guy is 
the subject.  It's a bit late to go back and reshoot it with the 50/1.2, wide 
open on him, for very shallow depth of field, and maybe a little bit of fill so 
he isn't in the dark while the photos are well lit, preferably with a more 
disturbing, thought provoking photo in the background.  :-)

On one hand, the ambivalence of the subject does help tell a story.  I kind of 
like photos where at first you think it's a photograph of one thing (the photos 
on display), and then you realize that it's about something else (someone 
thinking about the photos).  On the other hand, if it were my photo,  I'd 
probably go in with the adjustment brush and make him a little brighter.  I 
might also use the brush on the near wall of photos, (which seem like they 
might be what the camera focused on) and blur them out a bit, to fake a 
narrower depth of field.

Likewise, it is a very good picture as it is, but you wanted me to be brutal, 
and like a good sadist, I aim to please.
