Hi Everyone: Darrel & I watched a nice PBS video tonight entitled American Photography: A Century of Images. It's a nice sweeping overview of the photograph (1900-2000) and its impact on life, history et al. The commentary by art and photography historians is good, and it was still fun to revisit all the iconic images you'd expect to see from the 20th century. I recommend it for those who haven't seen it already.
I also just finished the book The Essentials of Street Photography by James Maher, which was also worth a read. Divided into 4 parts, it covers the conceptual and technical considerations of street photography as well as the editing process. It then finishes with interviews with Matt Weber, Blake Andrews, Mike Peters, Richard Bram, Jay Maisel, and Dave Beckerman. Maisel's work is amazing. You can see his work here if you're interested www.jaymaisel.com . Also included in the book are some pretty good exercises. Today, on the way to the subway I had the camera in hand and practiced the "stutter step" with not much success, I think. I do think the book may be too basic for many on the list, but for me it was just what I needed to lift my photographic spirits so to speak--even if for just a little while. Life really sucks at the moment. I haven't forgotten PAW; I have the frames on my camera for the last 3 or 4 weeks; I just haven't had the time--or the interest--to get them on the computer and processed, and I took some photos today, but more to practice the stutter step then to actually photograph something, but I'm on spring break now and despite all the work I have to confront during break, I'm determined to find an afternoon to have a proper photo walk. I certainly haven't forgotten about you guys, and I know I'll be more active soon. I just need a bit more time to get through this really bad patch life has made for me and Darrel. Big cheers and I'll probably pop back on the list later in the week.
