Yeah, that's the error message.
The only difference is my messages don't go into a "sent" folder; when I
click "ok" to acknowledge the error message the window closes & they
just disappear.

it's triggered by a Yahoo problem, and you should find the message in
the Sent folder, though it wasn't really sent (and someone needs to turn
on logging and file a proper bug for that part of the problem)
from my experience, email is like tripods; i spent a lot of time and
effort (and a little money) trying out different low-end and
intermediate services before i paid a modest amount for a *serious*
email service; and now i realize what a waste were all the intermediate
attempts; my "Gitzo/RRS/Kirk/etc." choice was fastmail.fm, but there are
others
