LOL - I'm from the Midwest but my parent's were native New Yorkers and I picked up a lot of their affectations of speech. And *they* always called these guys daddy long legs as well... So it must be universal....

well I'm from the midwest too, Mark - and certainly harvestmen were what we called Daddy Long Legs - I didn't even learn the term harvestmen
until -um- maybe twenty or thirty years ago.

The regional names for all sorts of species can get confusing... just like "Sweet Rolls" and "Danish" or "Soda" vs "pop", eh?

Thanks, Ann, and everyone else who took a look!

I think that "daddy Long Legs" refers to either these harvestmen
thingies (they are actually not spiders) or to long legged cellar
spiders (true spiders). Someone once asked me to take a bunch of photos
of "daddy long legs" for an article he was writing and was totally
baffled when I sent him photos of Opiliones (harvestmen) when he wanted
Pholcidae (cellar spiders). Maybe a regional difference? I don't know..
