Mark,

I have thought of that, but I have a Sigma 70 -300 mm f 4-5.6 Power zoom that I like very much. It has been a good lens that I have had for a while. For zooms I use, the others are: : Pentax 20-35 mm f4, and my old Tamron 35-135mm f 3.5-4.5, which is used when I feel I need to be in that range, but it is totally manual and somewhat ungainly. It is only slightly smaller and heavier that the Sigma.

I had not thought of the 28-104 mm lens because I use the Sigma so much, but it is one way to get over the hump with relatively modern lenses. If I did that i probably would then go looking for something like a fast 40 mm lens. A lens in that range has been in the back og my mind anyway.

So many choices, ah well.

You might want to consider a 28-105 f4 - 5.6 power zoom. I did some informal testing / playing around while bored this weekend and was really impressed with how sharp my copy of this lens is on the K-3. At 50mm f8 it was pretty close to the A 50 f1.4, which actually surprised me. I use it mostly on film bodies and will say that it does have some softness in the corners and edges on film exposures but is still quite good. Drawbacks are that it is heavy (due to the useless power zoom feature), slow (f4 - 5.6), variable aperture and has a rotating front element. None of those are really show stoppers for me. I sometime use the power zoom on the Mz-S and Pz-1p.

I also tested my copy of the FA 28-70 f4. Clearly not on par with the 28-105 but pretty good. Back in the film days I actually preferred it to the 28-105 - maybe my copy is deteriorating. I would not recommend going with one of these, though.

Good luck!

I have been using my Pentax 20-35 MM and a Sigma 70-300 MM and have been mostly happy with the results from these two lenses on my ist DS. But the man in the middle is an elder lens (Tamron 35-135 mm Manual Zoom and focus) and I think it is time to replace it. It seems as though both Tamron and Sigma have mid range zooms that have received nice reports. I have been pleased with my long Sigma and may be swayed in that direction. But before I go do something, I am curious about what the group would go to and how they think a future camera upgrade might affect the choices?
