Had to log into the App Store which required me to update my billing information. No big problem there. It tells me I'm currently at OS X 10.8.3. It's currently downloading OS X Mavericks (it said free update?).
yes 10.9 is free, whether as update or fresh install
Is that going to fix that "goto fail" bug? Or am I going to have to get a later version?
the goto fail bug is *not* in 10.8.x (which your computer came with); it is in 10.9.0 and 10.9.1, and has been fixed in 10.9.2, which is probably what is downloading
I also got a bunch of emails from Apple telling me my Apple ID is being used with a new computer that it's never been associated with before, but since it's notifying me of things I just did a few minutes before to get it up & running, it's not that worrisome ...
those are messages you hope you never see when you *haven't* just set up a computer
Except, it says I've used my Apple ID to log into Facetime & iMessage. I have only the vaguest idea what those are (something like Skype & AOL Instant Messenger??). I'll have to figure out where to turn them off in a bit.
they are built-in; if you don't use them, don't worry about it; FaceTime is like Skype (voice and/or video) and iMessage is like text messaging or IM; on a Mini, FaceTime won't do much unless you add a microphone and/or vid-cam; these messaging tools only call others who have Apple Accounts, on Mac, iPhone or iPad (on the phone it is integrated with the same app that does text messages, and will switch between services automatically)
The other thing I need to find is how to set the auto-time-out so I don't have to hover over it and move the mouse every few minutes to prevent it from going to sleep while I'm doing other things.
System Preferences > Energy Saver; look around because System Preferences has much else that you may want to configure
