I'm not sure if you are knowingly yanking John's chain with that suggestion Christine, but John: before you give her your speech about how much you detest letting any more of Google into your life, you should stop and consider this choice.
You can have either or both POP3 and IMAP. (I use both.) And it can be set up to scrape other mailservers via POP for you so you get all your mail in one place. It's reliable. I've been using it as my (almost) sole email server for over seven years and the amount of time I could not access my mail in that period is maybe an hour. It has competent tech support staff. I wouldn't give you odds that you could ever contact any of them, but you never need to because they treat it seriously and run it like an actual business with paying customers. Indeed they have paying levels of support (Google Apps) so the free users benefit. They provide infinitely more service than you pay for since you don't pay anything for it. :-) And you don't need to worry about ads and such if you only access it through IMAP or POP3. You'll just get your mail; no hassles. I think I can speak for all PDMLers when I say that I'd really like to see you have reliable email for once.
