Picked up another Schwalbe Marathon at a local shop that specializes in old bikes. The guy thought that the separation around the bead was responsible for the bulge; and when I thought about it, the tire is at least 4 years old. So I put the new one on. Planning on a ride tomorrow.
On this bike, I replaced the original Brooks saddle with a new one about 5 or 6 years ago, replaced the worn-out pedals before that, and replaced the original Simplex derailleurs with the same models (from another local shop specializing in vintage bikes) about 10 years ago. So, I'm not so interested in using newfangled parts.
