With the advent of auto focus varifocal zooms have become more the norm, even though the shift is often small, in previous eras, the mark of a good zoom was that it didn't shift the focus plane as it zoomed, unless it was specifically noted.

They definitely do. Otherwise one couöd zoom in, focus much more precisely and zoom out again. You'll admit that this would be far too easy...
