I don't know from personal experience, however, Photozone has reviews of both lenses, (shot with a K10D), they don't take into account sample variation, but, though it's often mentioned, few do. Here are the pages for what they're worth.

I expect that in actual use the biggest difference is that the AOV for the 55 is ~85mm E while the 50mm is ~75mm E. That seems to matter a lot to some people. Personally while I like 85mm on 35mm film, I find the difference between 75mm and 85mm to be too small to worry about.
