I'm more than pleased with the IQ of both my 1970's atomic S-M-C
50/1.4 and the DA* 55/1.4, but the DA* gives it just enough more magic
as to be well worth the expense to me.

For one thing the aperture blades are curved such that from f/1.4
through f/4.0 the aperture is a perfect circle and the oof areas are
just that much creamier with smooth transitions.

I don't give a rat's ass about the other technical measurements that
the lens weenies do. It's how painterly can I get a portrait to look
that matters to me. You've seen that recent shot of Dorrie seated in a
red sweater. _That_ speaks volumes about what the 55 does. Some folks
are pretty much jizzing themselves over it. :)
