I'm surprised by that. My machine is a similar sweet-spot machine from
5 years ago (Core i7-930, 4 cores) and it handles 16 MP files quite
comfortably (I feel no pressure to upgrade for photo processing). I
would have thought a corresponding present-day machine would be fine
with files 2.6x larger.

(Though maybe we have different requirements here? I don't care about
import or export times, when I can be doing something else. My main
concern is responsiveness during editing.)

Thing is, Pentax has to pick from available sensors. If the available
24-36 MP parts are not backside-illuminated (I don't recall seeing any
such sensors), then the 41 MP may match them in terms of noise on a
per-pixel basis (and trounce them if downsampled to the same pixel
count).
