Price these days? Maybe not so much. You can pick up a K-3 for under $700. The K-3 II is quite a bit more expensive right now. Do note that the resolution would give you the ability to crop about 20% tighter. There are certain issues with the button layout on the back of the K-5, such as the live view button being easily triggered accidentally, and these seem to be resolved on the K-3. The K-3 is also supposed to have better autofocus, but that may only be in low light.

I don't know surf photography, but it's possible that they aren't changing distance from you fast enough that autofocus is totally critical. You might be able to get away with an older manual focus lens.

There is also the possibility of renting a lens for the weekend. If you explain to borrowlenses.com what you're using the lens for, they might even give you a substantial discount. I expect that you have all the forms they would need to write the donation off their taxes.
