another relevant use for extensions is that some third-party photo apps offer their editing tools for use directly within the Photos app, so you can do more types of editing than Photos alone offers, but you don't have to launch another app, similar to third party filters in Photoshop; here's a list i googled up to give you some ideas what this means; i personally use Skitch, Afterlight and Camera+ this way
