smugmug puts watermarks on my work for me on my page thereaslong as I've specified that for a specific gallery I'm loading a photo into- any of you who have looked at my photos
there will note that the watermark is small... ala the way Mark does his.

On facebook, unless I really don't care ifsomeone swipes 'em, I make them a bit more visible but not too obtrusive... I don't think. On ebay, if I'm offering a print of my own work
I put a big watermark across it and then show a small file without it too.

For photos of collectables and such that I'm selling I have a fairly obvious watermarkon the file "annsan scan" and the year. I do these with a text layer in photoshop at about 25% of the opacity.
I have had scans of things I sold on ebay stollen and caught the perps.

I think people shooting very popular tourist destinations and doing it well, sports figures, events, entrtainment celebrities,
and the kind of artistic nudes Bruce does are the most vunerable.

some of my film photos of Scrabble champions ended up on a Canadian broadcasting station vid without my knowledge but the
didn't the honorable thing and ponied upquickly.

With recent discussion about pictures getting taken by unscrupulous

etc, what is the view of watermarking images that are posted by folk here?

The views I've read seem to vary; those in the 'no' camp because you should
only be displaying a low res image and that a watermark distracts your eye.
The 'yes' camp are equally persuasive in that it immediately tells someone
that it is owned and who by.

I'm starting to take more pictures again and I think it's about time I had
my own account again somewhere, and I'm trying to work out which way I want
to go with watermarking images. I can't say that looking at those with
watermarks gives me any problems or distracts from what I should be looking
at.

Is there a right or wrong or simply a choice?
My view is that watermarking is not for the purpose of discouraging
infringers but for the benefit of those who come across your images
out of context and want to know who the creator is. (True, you can
accomplish this in metadata but it's amazing how many people don't
know how to look for it.) Accordingly, I watermark all my images, but
in a small and discreet fashion, making it as subtle as possible while
being completely legible.

If someone does steal an image outright, removal of the watermark
works against them in court and can net you extra damages.
