I'm not a "let the government do everything" type of guy (despite a general perception to the contrary). I am against a pervasive government interfering in our day-to-day lives.
But who better than the government to decide on environmental and land use issues like this? And if not the government, then who else? Chopping down an entire mountain has (to say the least) rather far reaching and long term consequences. Interested parties go far beyond private land owners; society at large has a say in something like this.
