Yes, indeed, there is. One of the most interesting places we visited is Kotzebue, on the Northwest coast. It sits on a spit of land jutting into an arm of the Bering Sea. The tundra stretches as far as one can see, with permafrost just a few inches under the surface. Native Alaskan culture is presented by the Inupiat tribal elders and youth of this remote village governed by native Alaskan corporation. Totally different from anything one will see on a shore excursion from a cruise ship.
