Fortunately, power zoom contacts are retracted inside the mirror box. All he has to do is scratch the paint from a small spot on the lens mount corresponding to the AF contact on the body. No need to skin the entire mount... For what it's worth I did the same with my macro tubes. I was lucky enough to have a small screw on the tube's mount placed on the right position.
