McAfee & Norton-Symantec seem to install something extra in their software that makes them particularly difficult to get rid of. The problem isn't with AVG, it's with McAfee (and Norton-Symantec).
This site claims AVG does have offline installers, they're just hard to find. It has links. https://www.techmesto.com/avg-2015-offline-installer-standalone/ In addition to anti-virus software, I use a HOSTS file to block unwanted sites. http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ For firewall, I've been relying on the firewall built into my router. We have recebtly accquired a new PC for use at home. For the last heaven knows how many years we've used AVG Internet Security on all our home systems, but I'm less than happy with trying to get AVG up and running on this new system. HP, in their infinite wisdom, installed a trial version of McAfee's competing product on the machine, and AVG fails when it tries to install itself in place of the McAfee product. AVG support seems to be unresponsive, and the advice from their forums is for me to remove McAfee before trying to install AVG. I might be prepared to do this, were it not for two issues: 1) several people who have tried this report that it still doesn't work, and 2) since AVG installs via a network download (rather than allowing me to create a standalone install package first, then disconnect from the internet) I'd have to have an unprotected machine with a live internet connection during the install, with no guarantee that I'd end up with a successful installation. Given that, and the lack of response from AVG support, I'm looking for an alternative solution. I've asked a few people I know for recommendations, and I've been pointed to either Kaspersky or Avast as good products. Nobody, however, seemed to think that relying on the McAfee product was a particularly good idea. Would anyone care to weigh in on the subject, and let me know what they would recommend for someone in my situation?
