Santorini is a nice little island, despite there being so many tourists (and
obviously why there are so many tourists). When I went there in the 1980s I
think the only way up from the ferry dock was by mule, or on foot. I walked
up, and it was tough.
The crescent shape is because it's a caldera. Think Minoan civilisation, and
Atlantis.
