Com'on! What you are saying is that if your calculator is broken, two numbers cannot be added correctly. You can still tune the colors if they are present in the RAW file. Yes, it might take longer time, but it is possible. But if they are not there, no grey card would help you getting them back.

Or, are you talking about setting the WB prior to shooting, as opposed to post-processing? Even in that case, in most situations, it is possible to do that in post, except for some bizarre, "pathological" cases.
