Looking between the cropped/uncropped I think I found the vast bulk of foreground tree (top-right) to be more of a problem than the sky. It seemed a little overwhelming, and cropping helps reduce that a bit. I think I slightly favour the original though. :)
The one with more features in the sky is a third shot I threw in there, which might have confused. Thanks for commenting, all useful.
