I'll be renting a car while in NZ (God help the other drivers), but what about
Sydney? Would a car
just be an encumbrance there? How good is public transportation and/or taxis,
Uber, etc?

Gee I don't know where to start. I'd say spend the entire trip on NZ's South
Island but I'm
slightly biased.
To be honest I haven't seen much of the North Island but I've heard good things
about Rotorua, the
Bay of Islands and the Coromandel Peninsula. Wellington (our capital city) is
lovely on a good day
and you might be lucky enough to get one in December.
Just about anywhere in the South Island is worth a visit. Marlborough Sounds,
Golden Bay, the
southern lakes (Tekapo, Pukaki, Wanaka, Wakatipu/Queenstown, Te Anau), the West
Coast, Fiordland.
The Kaikoura coast is very scenic, maybe if you're lucky the road will have
reopened by then. If it
hasn't, the alternative route through the Lewis Pass is also spectacular. If
wine is your thing,
there are plenty of wineries in Marlborough and Central Otago. Dunedin and
Christchurch are both
very nice.
I've visited Sydney a few times and it has to be about the world's prettiest
big city. It'll be
heaving on NYE!
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks to a frequent flyer program, looks like we are headed to the
land down under Dec 2017. Landing in Sydney then making our way to
NZ north Island then south, then returning to Sydney for the New
Year's Eve celebrations.
Any suggestions for photo ops from those familiar with those spots?
I'll probably take a nicer zoom lens or two plus the K-1 hopefully.
Was thinking of splitting the time evenly through those 3
destinations, but I hear the NZ south island is spectacular and might
warrant more time than the others. Any input?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
