Interesting... On this side of the big pond. Canadians tell that joke too.. but the guys in the boat are Newfies (Newfoundlanders) ... When I visited Newfoundland in 1979, there were three little encounters that made me think the jokes had some basis in fact...

(1) played a few games of Scrabble with a guy from Newfoundland on the ferry from Cape Breton to Argentia... ok, iwth my background and his kitchen table talent I was bound to be winning most games.. finally he played a seven letter word with two blanks in it .. after which he said he considered
throwing one back because they weren't worth anything.

(2) Taxi driver asking me about photography... telling me about problems he had had ... didnt' get any photos on the film.. bottom line - yup, he didn't take off the lens cap.

(3) Waitress and I are chatting while I'm making journal notes , she is married to a sailor, so I ask her (as I couldn't remember) what was port and what was starboard and she didn't know.

Nice try, they did not even have internet back then
Did you hear the one about the 2 Canadians out fishing on the big deep
lake? After reeling in a good haul, the first guy says to the second
guy, "Hey this is a great spot to fish, we should remember to come back
right here next time. I'll jump over the side and scratch an 'X' on the
bottom of the boat!"

"Don't be stupid" says the second guy. "What if we don't get the same
boat next time!?"
