Brian, I was in the same situation up till a couple of months ago: then I had 
an SSD with W10 put
into my Toshiba laptop, and the techie transferred all my installs at the same 
time - did a
brilliant job.  Now the thing is incredibly fast, even though it is now 8 years 
old!

I'd try that rather than using the old HDD, which could be close to failing 
anyway.
