So, thinking about the responses from PDMLers and the information I found
myself, I realized what question I should have asked:

Does anybody know if this area of photography (children's group photos) allow to have a reasonable business? By "reasonable", I mean affordable for customers, providing good quality photos, and financially feasible for the photographers.
I.e. is it fundamentally "race-to-the-bottom" sector, or it is just
the result of how various outlets/photographers conduct their business?



John: so, the Strawbridge studios that you've mentioned: do they produce reasonable quality photos? (BTW, the photo on their "Administrators" page is obviously photoshopped, and that job could've been done better:
