That reminds me of a NatGeo program about Area 51 (Groom Lake). When the
Lockheed A-12 spy plane was in development for the CIA Radar Cross Section
(RCS) testing was going on at the base. A mockup was mounted on a pylon for the
tests. Because the Soviets already has some spy satellites and the CIA didn't
want the Soviets to see the mockup they removed the it from the pylon when a
Soviet satellite was due to pass overhead. At first the CIA didn't realize was
that the Soviet satellites could do infrared imaging. The shadow of the mockup
was cooler than the surrounding ground. The Soviets were able to discern the
mockup's outline from the infrared image of the shadow. Once the CIA learned
that the Soviets had an outline of the mockup they figured out how it was
obtained and then instituted thermal counter measures.

The Soviet photographs showed the place where the mockup was.
