Just now, standing at the kitchen sink & looking out the window ... young cardinal (that kind of reddish brown this year's chicks have before the bright red feathers come in) landed on a branch outside the window, not 5 feet away from me.

We looked at each other just long enough for me to say "Hello little bird" & then it flew away.

"Always have a camera with you" wouldn't have helped, because even if I'd had the camera in my hands right when the little bird landed, it would have been gone before I could lift the camera & focus.

But I enjoyed our moment of communication, however brief.
